Made, quite literally, in the shade

Well, it`s happened. I`ve picked up the wool and started using my hands again. I don`t know why I ever took such a long break because I feel waaaayyyyy better when I`m doing something creative. I`ve been playing around with some new patterns and have a few that I`m really liking. As well, I`ve met up with a great crafty friend at work and we`re putting together some ideas for a shop, stay tuned…………………. In the meantime, if you`re interested in purchasing any of the items I make, or would like something custom made, contact me (see that link on the side there?).

Here`s what I`ve been up to. Most of these items were worked on while lounging under a beach umbrella. It`s a tough life.

Birds of a feather

Its been hot here. Not crazy hot like my eastward friends and family are being slaughtered with, but hot. Hot enough that sleeping at night requires a fan, set on high, blowing directly on me all night. As a result of the hot, dry air blowing into my face all night, I wake up every morning with a gross, dry, itchy throat. While complaining about my sore throat yesterday morning, Thomas asked why it was sore so I spent a bit of time explaining my dry- air- in-the-face theory. His reply, “I think your throat is sore because of all the talking you do ALL the time EVERY day.” Taken aback, I squealed “Heyyyyy, you rascal!” to which he replied, “I`m not a rascal, I`m a doctor.”

Sheesh.

Later, we made birdhouses. One of us wore only underwear so as not to get “all painty”.

really getting in there

Voila!

a new home

I hope this doesn`t encourage birds to fly in through that open window.

stay cool.

Adventures of Foxy

Have you seen The Fantastic Mr. Fox yet? You MUST! It is the best. I actually saw it when it first came out and I was nine months pregnant with Mr. T (Thomas, I mean) and Andrew and I went on this epic Christmas Day walk that ended up being 4 1/2 hours in total but had a nice little movie break in the middle. Anyway, I LOOOOVED the book and the movie, for once, did the book justice. Ever since, I have really wanted Thomas to have a little fox toy of some sort but I could never quite find what I was looking for so…… I made this guy….

The hipster fox, complete with an infinity cowl as they`re all the rage.

I love this guy! I used a pattern for the head but then winged it for the rest of him because I was picturing a fox with long, spangly limbs. As I was making the long, skinny legs I was thinking about hipster guys with their skinny jeans but because I have no idea how to even begin crocheting skinny jeans, I decided to give this hipster guy an infinity cowl instead. Why a cowl you are undoubtedly asking your collective selves? Well, yesterday at Meinhardt`s (over priced fancy grocery store that sells DE-LISH-US macaroons) I was sort of blankly staring at the person in front of me, admiring their cowl and figuring out how I could make up a pattern for the same when the person turned and….ohhh, hello SIR, I like your man-cowl. So you`re wearing cowls now are you boys? Alrighty then, hipster fox with a cowl it shall be.

Of course, no hipster photo op would be complete without the requisite old-timey moustache pic……

I`m a crafty fox, seeee. And I got this stach, seeee. (read that in an old timey villain voice)

And if the fox is going to do it…..

Mwaaaa haaaa haaaa!

We then headed out for the day and, of course, we took foxy with us for some city adventures. (note: my apologies for the poor quality of many of my photos lately – I`ve been taking lots of pics with my iphone which just don`t look as nice when inserted here.) Every time I tried to get a pic of Thomas and Foxy, Thomas would turn Foxy to look at him so there were a lot of shots of Foxy`s tail in different parts of the city.

It was an exhausting, but fun, afternoon. Sullied only by a brief pit-stop at the doctor`s to find that I have strep throat, booooo. Nothing that a hot tea (and antibiotics) won`t cure.

Foxy had a latte. Skinny, obv.

Later, I made a mini-foxy to mail to a friend. I`ll post a tutorial for the little guy this weekend some time. Here are a few pics of Foxy and his little friend and of mini-fox, staring out at the rainy day and wishing he could have a city adventure like Foxy did. Sigh Some other time mini-fox.

The end is near

The picture below represents school and I in a face off. Guess who is winning.

This is actually Thomas and a T-rex. I was talking metaphorically.

But……..I am in the home stretch. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Albeit, between that light and I lays five weeks of working in the trauma room (gulp), but I just have to keep reminding myself that the end is near. I`ll try not to remind myself of that aloud, around my patients, as phrases like that seem to set people on edge when they`re in the ER.

In other news, when have I ever let a little exam get in the way of me and a craft project? Correct answer: never! I`ve updated my jewellery page with these little gems……

A new page for me

Betcha thought I was doing something clever with that title and it was going to turn out to be a terrible pun like many of my others? Well, you were WRONG dear reader. I have, quite literally, made a new page on this blog to showcase some of the items I will be selling in the ETSY shop that I plan on opening once the tedium and chaos that is my critical care nursing upgrade, is finally over in March. If you don`t have the energy to click on the page (just up there on the right. See it?) then I will show you some of the items here (and I`ll suggest you go get a RedBull or something because, seriously? That would have taken, like, zero effort.)

Where DOES the time go?

Hey! Know what day it is? If you guessed that it’s a day that I should be studying, then you`re absolutley right! If you guessed that for every 20 minutes I study, I spend another 5 30 minutes crafting up something cute, then, right again and you know me too well! Here is a little project that I whipped up in precisely the amount of time it should have taken me to memorize my Advanced Cardiac Life Support Algorithms! While that means I will be up late tonight doing what I should have been doing today, I will do so with the knowledge that tomorrow, my car keys and Blackberry will be carried in style (until I promptly lose them somewhere because I usually just put them in my pocket and will likely forget that the clutch is mine and leave it on a table at the hospital). Ah well! Here is the clutch with hand-made fabric button that I made and the tutorial for both the clutch AND the button. Yup, two-for-one today.

It`s that time again!

I`m back in school and working in the ER and have a million assignments and volumes of articles to read so, I should be doing this……

Hard(ly) at work. If I were doing any work though, it should probaly be on my terrible jokes.

What I am actually doing is this….

Crochet leaf earrings. Just like the title says.

Crochet leaf earrings!

Yup. Making things I don`t need. If you feel the need to abandon the things you should actually be attending to and make a pair yourself, the tutorial is here.
